Here are some fun interview questions I gave Sergeant Vern to understand him at the beginning of Champions of Light. He’s hiding under an alias, so some answers are not as revealing.
Hometown/Current City:
Phoria Heights
How did you end up in your current city?
born here
Do you plan to stay there, why or why not?
Yes.
If you could live anywhere, where would you go and why?
Never thought about living anywhere else nor had a reason to. I enjoy visits to Gossimir Lake.
Is there anything else you'd like to say about where you live?
It is a mountainous place with long rough winters, but for 5 months it is a major trade route to the west. Because of avalanches and amount of snowmelt in the spring systems are in place to protect the kingdom. The kingdom is much larger than it looks because of plenty of side valleys and passes forking from the main one, though most are dead ends.
Most of the populous lives on the eastern side of the pass. They are well educated and the Cathedral of Light is the primary educator. I believe most of the people are happy living here.
Marital Status:
Single
Family (parents, siblings, children, etc.):
My parents are still alive. Carlissa, my sister, died because of an incurable disease that I am sure a witch caused.
To which family member are you the closest, why:
Mother, because she is one of the few people I can talk to freely.
If you could change anything about your family, what would it be (and why):
I would have Carlissa still alive and thriving.
What is your favorite thing about your family, why?
I lost my favorite thing, my sister, and the family has been broken ever since. At the moment I can’t say there is a favorite thing at all.
Is there anything else you'd like to say about your family:
I believe this all occurred because of a witch’s curse, and the last ten years have been hell because of it.
Education completed:
I might tell you all about that later.
What is your fondest memory of your entire educational experience?
What I have learned from a year at the Cathedral working as a sergeant under Sir Bornick. I help with a program that gives deviants a second chance at life rather than winding up in prison. I might get myself straightened out.
Is there anything else you'd like to say about your educational experience?
Some things can’t be taught and you have to learn them by working through them, no matter how hard it is. I’m still working on figuring out the truth of things.
Where do you currently work:
At the Cathedral assisting with the Deviants Class.
How did you find your job?
The sergeant job came as the Cathedral’s way of helping me stop drinking and sort myself out. It’s where I’ll be until they accept the truth behind my issues.
What is your dream job, why?
Not sure, but I know what I’ll eventually inherit as a job.
How would you describe your work ethic?
You only do a good job if you put your effort into it and work to improve your abilities.
How would you describe your social life?
Terrible.
How would your friends describe you?
As a drunk who needs to get his head on straight. I’m partly in the cathedral job thanks to one friend dragging me here, though I haven’t seen him since. He has other responsibilities and doesn’t live nearby. Sir Bornick has grown into a friend even if he is also my boss and he sees me as redeemable.
How would you describe your friends?
Sir Bornick is unbelievably steadfast in helping me, even when I have not wanted to help myself. Then again, I’m probably just another deviant because of my issues.
Why do you think an active social life is important (or not important)?
It’s important. We are not to do life alone no matter what we think or how we feel. Now if I could figure it out.
How would you describe your faith/religious affiliation?
I’m a believer of the Lord of Light, but I’m angry he let my sister die to an incurable disease.
How did you come to these beliefs?
It’s the faith of the kingdom even if not everyone follows it.
Why do you think faith is important (or not important)?
It’s the core of everything, even when you have to fight to understand it. I can’t give it up even if I’m confused and disheartened.
How do you exercise your beliefs?
I do my best to study the Script and I go to weekly mass. I talk to the Lord of Light, actually I tend to yell. Not a good thing.
How would you share your beliefs with a friend?
I don’t very often, but I try my best to explain it to a class of deviants when they have questions, though I figure out ways for others to answer instead.
Is there anything else you'd like to say about your beliefs?
Despite all my confusion and anger with life, I can’t give up on the Lord of Light.
Is there anything else you’d like people to know about you?
I have a sense of humor if I can find a way out of my brooding. I love horses and know how to ride well. I hate to see anyone hurting because of things that could have been changed. I’ll risk my neck to save a child from a calamity.
